Lil Grey Lady
The island of Nantucket is often so encrusted with fog that it became known at the Little Grey Lady of the Sea. My customers wanted something that would remind them of the wonderful summers they spend on the island.
The three lighthouses on the island are each distinctfully different. The annual "Rainbow Parade" shows the brightly colored sails and this is the first time I used the marquetry technique so as the capture the brilliant colors that only the dyed veneers could capture.
The blackline maple burl, dyed to the multi hues of the ocean shows the backdrop for these icons.
In the center of town there are lampposts that have flowers planted at the base and partway up are used as inlays on each shaft.
The custom butt cap protector is a bouy.
On the wooden presentation case I’ve used woven wood as the panel into which there is an oval scrimshawed with a beach and ocean scene. Because of the fog the island usually has the islanders placed lightships off shore to augment the lighthouses. The sailors that manned the lightships were so bored that they started weaving wood into baskets. They became very famous for their baskets and I chose to include the woven wood as a tribute to them.
